aka “Greg’s 65th Birthday Trip”
Greg put his creative mind to work to dream up his ultimate birthday gift. At first he searched for a vintage pinball machine for our condo in Puerto Rico, but had to give up since there were none to be bought on the island.
Then he thought of an Alaskan cruise. Now, that was something Wendy could get her teeth into. She investigated and planned, and when her work was complete Greg said, “I’ve decided I really don’t want to go after all. It would be like just another vacation and this is a special birthday.” So Alaska is a plan, sitting in a folder, waiting to be executed some year in the future.
Then he dreamed of a Japanese toilet seat. You have to have visited Japan and tried out their warm spray toilet seats to know true luxury. We investigated all of the features to decide what is important to Greg, however, our bathroom renovation project is not moving forward at all this year due to a lack of interested contractors. There seemed to be no purpose in buying a power toilet seat to place in the corner of the guest room.
Wendy had the great idea of going to New York City! Yes, it is a trip, but she said she would make it unlike any other vacation. First of all, it would be short – a 4 day / 3 night getaway. We would pack light. (That in and of itself is a gift to Greg!) Secondly, we would do the things Greg wanted to do – go to a comedy show, go to a Korean restaurant, see Stephen Colbert at the Late Show.
Greg got to ride in a New York City taxi-cab, on the subway, even on a bus (“You’re taking me on a bus!!??”). We saw the lights of Times Square, the Statue of Liberty; we went to the Hayden Planetarium and flew in a helicopter. We ate at a Jewish Deli.
And now we have to go back to do all the things we couldn’t fit into those four days…
