We spent our honeymoon in Belize in Dec 2012. The country was my first-ever tropical visit. Only one week, but it was eventful – visiting Belize City, passing through Belmopan to our cabana at Mariposa Jungle Lodge near San Ignacio.
At our lodge we took day trips to the Mayan ruins at Caracol, Rio Frio, Actun Tunichil Muknal, a challenging river/cave walk to a Mayan ceremonial site complete with skeletons, and zip-lining at Calico Jack’s nearby.
We even took a day trip to Tikal in Guatemala.
Somehow, in 2011, my new husband convinced me that we should go to Belize for our honeymoon. I don’t know how that happened. I chose the Mariposa Jungle Lodge near San Ignacio. The lodge promised cabanas with screens and mosquito netting, fans and a package of sightseeing and adventures. We

I am a type 1 diabetic, and have been for fifty-three years. From Antarctica to Svalbard, Australia to Africa, I’ve visited every continent. With my husband Greg, I have been on safari to Africa, wandered among the blue boobies in the Galapagos, slogged through jungle mud in Laos, and he has even chased an ocelot in Costa Rica (with his camera!) Our travel has taken careful planning, and constant attention to what is most important. I want to give you the inspiration and travel tips to enable you also to look beyond your own personal challenges, to not hide behind those words “I could never” and to see the world. |
