Japan Travel Advice, Tips and Stories
A Diabetic Travel Blog
I hope you enjoy my Japan travel blog (even if you aren’t diabetic!) I offer tips for diabetic travel which can be valuable for people without diabetes as well. Safe and healthy travel is great for all of us!
We visited Japan in October 2019 on a 21-day self-planned and self-guided tour.
Starting in Osaka, we headed to Nara, Himeji, Kyoto, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Misawa, Hachinohe, Aomori and finally Tokyo.
Self-guided also means that we depended on long distance trains and city buses and subways. Hauling our luggage around was no treat. When you have to wheel around an entire carry-on bag full of diabetic medical supplies you learn to appreciate your husband! As he says frequently, “I just carry the luggage!”
The trip really wore out the soles of our shoes but it was, as so many of our trips are, the trip of a lifetime! I hope you enjoy our shows and articles.

The Breathtaking Takayama Autumn Festival (video)
We designed the itinerary of our entire Australia and Japan trip around attending the Takayama Autumn Festival. It was advertised to be one of the top three festivals in Japan. We were also enticed by the promised small-town atmosphere and the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Shirakawa-go villages of traditional houses.
A quick day-trip to Shirakawa-go (video)
While in Takayama, Japan, we took a quick day-trip to Shirakawa-go, a small village chock full of “gassho” houses, set in the mountains west of Takayama. Gassho houses are traditional A-frames built in the mountains of Japan. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors flock to the village of Shirakawa-go to
