Iceland Travel Advice, Tips and Stories
A Diabetic Travel Blog
I hope you enjoy my Iceland travel blog even if you aren’t diabetic. I’ve included Iceland Travel Tips for everyone, not just diabetics. In fact, there is so much more to say about Iceland that isn’t related to the challenges of being a diabetic.
In addition to the goal of providing travel insights to diabetics, my goal is to provide unique perspectives and tips to everyday travelers. I don’t want to re-iterate the same list of places to see that everyone is writing about – I want to tell you about unique places to see, unique ways to see them and unique tips on doing it easily.
Iceland in May
Greg and I visited Iceland in May 2012 on a mad whirlwind of an 8-day road trip on the ring road around the island. We visited Reykjavik, Vik, Kirkjubaejarklauster, Djuipivogur, Egilstaddir, Seydisfjordur, Myvatn, Husavik, and Akureyri. We missed the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords.
Did you know that if you visit Iceland in May you probably won’t experience those awesome views of purple Lupines?
Did you know you can see Puffins in Borgarfjordur Estri? Where is Borgarfjordur Estri? Click here to learn.
But this wasn’t my first trip to Iceland.
Iceland in June
In June 2004 I visited Iceland with my parents on an 18 day road trip of the ring road as well. You can read all about these two itineraries here. I’ve listed some very interesting Lessons Learned from my multiple trips, such as when to see the Lupines.
Driving in Iceland is Easy
Driving in Iceland is simple. The Ring Road circles the main part of the island, is usually a two-lane blacktop road with long stretches of straight highway, with generally little traffic, depending on where you are on the island. It’s easy!
On my first trip, we rented a station wagon. That was OK, but limited us to the Ring Road and the towns on the Ring Road. So, on my second trip, with my husband, I had us rent an SUV. While it was not my intention to go far back into the wilderness, it did give us flexibility to drive down some of the side roads to see unique views and have unique experiences. Did you know that on the east side of Iceland, on a particular back road the Skuas (huge seabirds) will come down and bodysurf on your vehicle? Maybe soon I’ll write an entire article about it! I’m pretty sure I can still find the location on the map.
Iceland Travel Tips
I’ve written a Diabetic Travel Tips article for the diabetics, and an article about a unique technique on how to sleep in the midnight sun.

Jökulsárlón the Glacial Lagoon
We stayed the previous night at the Hotel Skaftafell, and traveled about 45 minutes north to Jokulsarlon, the Glacial Lagoon. I had visited Jokulsarlon with my parents in 2004. In 2004, we had taken the left hand turn right BEFORE the bridge, to a gravel area where cars were parked. Traveling with Photographers
