Belize Mariposa Jungle Lodge Review

Last Updated on May 18, 2020 by PowersToTravel

To this point in my life I had never vacationed to a jungle or hot location.  Due to need to keep my insulin cold, I had always chosen the cold spots – Norway, Iceland, Scotland, even Antarctica.  Due to fear of water-born illnesses, I had always gulped the fresh crisp water of those northern countries.

With this adventure my new husband was urging me to go far beyond my comfort zone.  Greg, and the desire to climb a Mayan pyramid is what propelled me onward.

Mariposa’s list of adventures was appealing.  They are highly rated on tripadvisor.com.  However, it was the offer of a daytrip to Tikal that turned the tide.  Add to that the private cabanas with king-sized beds and mosquito netting in the midst of the jungle, and I was hooked.

We went there for our belated honeymoon.  The towel-sculpted swans greeted us in our private cabana.  The “oooo” I breathed as I first glimpsed them still echos between us.

When visited

Late December

Ultimate reason for choice of resort

Mosquito Netting around bed with fan; Tikal.

Pros

Tremendous jungle experience, with trips and adventures coordinated right on site, easy package deal, Tikal day trip available.  Wonderful private cabana with comfortable beds.  Fan.  Locally sourced.  Network of trails and a bird-watching tower.  Too much to see and do and too little time.  Flexible and caring (see food issue below.)

Cons

In December the pool is freezing;  the jungle vegetation blocks the sun for a good part of the day.  The food is good and adequate but can’t be considered plentiful.

Lessons Learned

Once you get to know me, you’ll find that for every trip the “con” is food.  I learned in Belize that I hate cilantro.  The staff tried very hard to provide me non-cilantro options, however that is difficult in Latin America, I know!

Word of warning – even though you’ll be there several days, don’t take your clothes out of your suitcase and put them in the drawers provided.  There was no air-conditioning, and that was just fine with me, because I wanted the jungle experience.  However our clothes got very humid and damp.  It would have been better to have left them secure and protected from the humidity in our suitcases.
