Sucevita Monastery in Bucovina is still photogenic after lunch (day 7)

We had started our day around 9am, visited Voronet Monastery, the Folk Heritage Museum, Moldovita Monastery and traveled forty minutes over the mountain to Sucevita, all before noon.

Both Voronet and Moldovita are both excellent in the morning sun. The sun shines directly on its most preserved frescoes.

The drive to Sucevita, I can assure you, is best in the sun! I can’t imagine going over this road in bad weather:

We stopped by the Complex Turistic Voievod just five minutes from Sucevita for a sit-down lunch on the terrace. Once again I chose chicken, this time in cream sauce with salad greens. Salad on vacation is such as luxury for me! See my post about drinking the water in Eastern and Central Europe. Lunch was delicious.

After lunch we quickly arrived at Sucevita Monastery. Each monastery that day, though very similar, had its own unique quirks. Unlike the others, Sucevita was a highly fortified monastery, with towers and gatehouses.

Its frescoes seemed to me to be a little less well preserved, and certainly it didn’t have a mural with the same engaging story line as the two previous monasteries:

In the picture above, there is a diagonal line going from lower right to upper left. Upon closer inspection, you can see it’s a mob of angels peering over the shoulders of saints on the steps to heaven. I’m thinking at the row of angels just above the heaven-bound are holding the halos they are about to place on the heads of the saints?

And what is below the diagonal are those condemned to hell. You can just see the hands of one trying to pull himself up onto the stairs, in the picture above. However, the damned were a bit faded from the weathering.

This video, however, really gives you the feeling of being there:

And this little clip brings out the colors of the saints.

From Sucevita we headed back an hour or so to Gura Humorului, stopping on our way at our final monastery – Humor.
