For so many, Osaka Japan is a day-trip out of its more famous nearby cousin, Kyoto. But since we flew into Osaka from Cairns, Australia, we made Osaka our first home-base city in our October 2019 tour through Japan, staying there four nights.
What an excellent decision! As a first introduction to Japan, Osaka did not disappoint! Color and lights, temples, castles, extremes! Osaka had it all.

With my husband Greg, I have been on safari to Africa, wandered among the blue boobies in the Galapagos, slogged through jungle mud in Laos, and he has even chased an ocelot in Costa Rica (with his camera!) Osaka was my base for a historical tour of early Imperial Japan, from Asuka to Heian-kyo.
I saw sights from the tomb of Emperor Jimmu to the gardens at Ginkakuji and the Imperial Palace in Kyoto.
I had lots of exotic sandwiches at convenience stores and a Hiroshima style okonomiyaki in Takehara. After all that walking my A1C was 5.2 on my next check-up.
I found the most important part of the trip was the ability to read the word “carbohydrate” on package labels.
I hope you got the Osaka Amazing Pass for your time there. All the free admissions included in the pass made it a great money saver.
