Both Nara and Himeji are popular day trips out of Osaka and Kyoto. We visited Nara in October 2019 as a day trip out of Osaka, and then stopped in Himeji as a detour on our train journey from Osaka to Kyoto.
We were very surprised by the huge number of tourists in Nara on an everyday Wednesday in October, especially by the huge number of school children. The weather was gray, but it did not rain.
We had been warned about a possible onslaught of tourists at Himeji, but also on a gray, rain-spitting day, we saw few crowds and no experienced no lines.
