Six days in Madrid and its fascinating easy daytrip destinations (video)

We visited Madrid, Cuenca, Ávila, Segovia and Toledo, but still missed some excellent destinations

For the first six days of our Spain adventure in June 2023 we rented an apartment in the La Latina quarter of Madrid. We visited Madrid, and also took personally-guided day trips via train to Cuenca, Ávila, Segovia and Toledo.

I worried about too much train activity, too many schedules and connections to potentially miss. However, I was determined to see these amazing places – each had a unique sight to see. Cuenca’s old city sits on top of a cliff with wonderful view of the cliff and valley. Ávila’s old town is surrounded by ancient, well-preserved city walls. Segovia is home to the old Roman aqueduct and the Alcazar Castle. Toledo is famous for its 16th century artist El Greco, and the huge Cathedral.

But what about Salamanca with its University and huge Plaza Mayor? It was just too far away, we didn’t have another day to dedicate to it, and I was afraid of just another train day! What about El Escorial? The fort / castle was convenient to Madrid, but again, we just didn’t have the time. But now we have new places to go, next time in Spain!

Coordination of the day trips involved not only researching trains from Madrid, but also the metro and cercanias trains in Madrid in order to get us from La Latina to the respective Madrid train stations. Then I had to research how to get from the local train stations in Cuenca, Ávila, Segovia and Toledo to the old town areas. Last, but not least, I had to research all of the tourist attractions in each town, as some are not located directly in the old town centers, and we wouldn’t want to miss out on them! This is sounding like a rather extensive post on how to see Madrid and its environs in 6 days by train. But it doesn’t belong here, with the video!
