We headed off south from Sighasoara towards Brasov, the home of Bran Castle – Dracula’s Castle.
However, on the way we passed a hilltop fort, Cetatea Rupea. “Would you like to visit?” asked Iulian.
Would we like to visit a fort? Of course Greg wanted to visit a fort.
And of course I wanted to visit anything picturesque which would also offer views over the valleys. Romania is so beautiful that any opportunity to get a better look is a good thing.
We actually didn’t learn much about the fort on the visit. We spent so much time strolling the wide paths and taking pictures of it and the surrounding countryside that we didn’t have much time for the museum.
Here, take a peak:
The air was crisp, and the morning light raked across the countryside.
There was some sort of display in the museum which seemed to commemorate an historic moment:
Sadly we don’t know what it was all about!
Romania is so chock full of unexpected historic sites that we could have spent months in the country and not seen all we wanted to see.
But we had to leave behind Cetatea Rupea, and continued south to Bran.

Wikipedia’s article about the Rupea Citadel – did you know that this fortress is one of the oldest archaeological sites in Romania, dating from 5500 BC to 3500 BC, and is also home to a Dacian fort from the period when they were conquered by the Romans? Its history is really interesting. I really recommend reading the Wikipedia article.
