I’m anxious to tell you about, and show you pictures of, the amazing painted monasteries of Bucovina, however I first have to introduce you to the awesome Folk Traditions Museum.
There are times when traveling on a planned itinerary (not a group trip mind you!) but a trip where the agency has a schedule of things it thinks you should see, that I want to say “No museum! We want to be out and about, in nature, seeing the important sites.” I did say that to our guide in Bulgaria on one occasion, but Iulian, our guide in Romania, had already said it wouldn’t take very long, and was very good.
“Well, OK,” I thought to myself. After seeing the peasant museum the previous day I wondered what more I would see.
It would have been a big mistake to miss this museum!
It’s quite large, actually two stories tall. The first story had a traveling exhibition of cartoon art which I found unnecessary for us, considering all there is to see in Romania. However the second story was filled, that is chock-full of, life-sized mannequins in peasant and richer historical dress, in all kinds of activities.
Primary the displays showed winter holidays – Christmas traditions and extraordinary New Years celebrations. Here’s a bit of Christmas:
And here’s one of the extraordinary New Year’s masks and costumes:
The colors and textures mesmerized me:
Greg always feels he needs to get into the action. Can you spot him? Hint: he’s the one without the hat!
