Ahhhhh, Saranda

We have read and heard that many people feel Saranda has grown far too populous and far too over-built in recent years.  Apparently the growth of the town has been so rapid and uncontrolled that the government is finally enforcing property and construction laws which have been ignored.  New apartments and hotels in recent years had sprung up along the waterfront of Saranda like, well, toadstools.  Now, quite a number of apartment buildings which do not comply are being torn down.

However, for us, following the 1st weekend in September, the waterfront was simply beautiful.  It was not too crowded, but full enough of happy vacationers like us.  The shining sun, beautiful blue waters, colorful umbrellas, happy swimmers and boaters, colorful apartments and hotels all welcomed us.  Of course, we were visiting in September, following the crush of the summer season, but prior to the final end of the season.

Our hotel was the Demi Hotel, described to us as a brand new hotel.  Certainly we couldn’t find it on the Internet.  We were given a corner room, with a balcony overlooking the side, which meant it had a great view of the curving waterfront.

Once again, Kledi left us to our own devices for the evening.  We sat in the sun on the balcony, napped a little, checked out the little grocery just down the street.  Our hotel was directly on the waterfront,  just a block or so down from the end of the pedestrian promenade.

We found an outdoor restaurant, and chose Pizza.  We were very close to Italy, and the menu focused almost entirely on seafood or Italian.  The pizza was great, the view and location fantastic and it was the most inexpensive meal of our trip.  Dinner for two for $8 including sodas!

We were about one block away from the promenade.  We strolled along the waterfront as the sun set, and the lights emerged.  There was a carnival air about the experience:  children’s rides, gelato vendors, souvenir booths.  Children darted here and there.  It was crowded, but not overwhelming.

Ahhhh, Saranda.
