Finding Tranquility at the Pattara Resort and Spa (review) (Day 6)

Last Updated on April 4, 2023 by PowersToTravel

The Pattara Resort and Spa in Phitsanulok… ah, I can still hear the soft tinkling of the music and I am still calmed by the views of lily pads, water features, and exquisite modern decor.

More likely, my tranquility is due to my first good night’s sleep since we arrived in Thailand.  Physically the experience to this point has been grueling.  Breath-taking and amazing, but due to the heat, definitely grueling.  And it wasn’t as if yesterday was any less hot and humid.  But we did spend a great deal more time in a van toodling from place to place, being led about by a competent and graceful guide. (Not me!)  Regardless, I slept the sleep of the dead last night, and woke to find myself physically changed:  it was as if metal bands had been constraining my chest and now were broken.  Previously I couldn’t walk up stairs without panting, resting and feeling very dizzy.  Today I feel completely normal.  Ahh, the relief.  I believe my problem had been dehydration.  I’ve updated my Diabetic Travel Tips for International Travel with the need to hydrate.  I’m glad I didn’t suffer any serious issues in Bangkok.

This is a picture of our Pattara Spa and Resort hotel room in Phitsanulok, from the night before:

Notice the picture window opening to the bathtub.  So many Southeast Asia hotels seem to think that a bathroom is not a private place, and seem to want you to put on a show!  Luckily most of our hotels offered privacy blinds which could be closed.  I’ve heard stories of “just friends” sharing rooms and having to deal with the exhibition!

We strolled past swimming pools and along boardwalks lined with lily-pad pools, arc’ed by trellises and waterfalls, leading us to the outdoor dining pavilion.  The huge buffet ran from one end of the pavilion to the other.  We poked and investigated and found that the staff, naturally, also cooked eggs and other hot made-to-order items.  I chose an omelet.  When it arrived my day’s happiness only increased:

But we weren’t allowed to bask in the luxury for long, because our Chiang Mai Tour Center guide and driver arrived at 8:30 to take us to our next destination, the Buddha Foundry in Phitsanulok.
