Taking a wee-wander around Chiang Mai, on our own (Day 11)

Last Updated on March 14, 2023 by PowersToTravel

This was our scheduled day of rest for Thailand. One day at the end of the Thailand portion of the trip in which we would not be escorted by guides, not on a schedule, just a day to wander and relax.

Well, that was dull. Greg slept away the morning. I wanted to wander around, but he wanted to sleep. I finally roused him out for a walk to lunch!

We headed from our hotel just on the outskirts of the walled city, the Imperial Mae Ping Hotel (not highly recommended due to the high volume of bus-tour guests) into the walled city itself. The skies were grey but no rain threatened.

Wat Inthakin

Heading north on Phra Pok Kloa Road, we peaked to the left and glimpsed a temple. Seeing a temple is definitely not unusual in any Thai town, but we just had to investigate. It turned out to be Wat Inthakin, on Introwarorot Road, a beautifully decorated and maintained 700 year old teak temple. I just read that article by Renown Travel that I linked in the previous sentence. It says that it is also known as Wat Sadue Muang, and the Temple of the City Navel, as it is located at the center of the city.

Its beautiful exterior was complemented by its, now typical to us, beautifully decorated and shiny interior.

The array of “hear-no-evil-see-no-evil’ cuddly monks made us laugh out loud. Greg even more so.

I turned around to look.

I’m hoping people won’t think it disrespectful. It’s Greg’s way of bestowing his highest honor.

Wat Duang Dee

We looked to our right and another temple awaited us: Wat Duang Dee, the “Good Luck Temple”. I was especially taken with its beautiful facade:

Three Kings Monument

Continuing onward, we stopped at the Three Kings Monument. The photography wasn’t the best. It’s definitely a morning picture, and certainly needs brighter skies.

Wat Chiang Man

Our temple of the day we happened to wander into was Wat Chiang Man, another amazing compound of chedi, temples, and pagodas:

even huge drums:

The color and design of all of the temples was addicting. I just wanted to stroll and take pictures of detail after detail. Even in the grey weather I just couldn’t stop:
