Our Tropical Beach-front Cabaña

In 2014 we searched for the right Christmas vacation destination.  With a nine-day Christmas shutdown provided to me courtesy of Raytheon Co., each year we looked for a near-by destination which would give us that away-from-it-all feeling.  After our success in Belize, we focused on the Yucatan, Mexico.  We learned that the Yucatan is a world away from the US, and also from the typical Mexican culture itself.   The Yucatan has a Mayan-centric culture, with many people still speaking only Mayan.

We learned of its fantastic beaches, and also of its Mayan ruins, nature reserves, and cenotes.

We settled on Tulum, several hours south of Cancun, and I found an eco-resort called Nueva Vida de Ramiro which offered cabañas by the sea.   The website showed a detailed map of the entire resort, with the location of each cabaña and its facilities.  I chose Ola, directly on the beach, and private.

Oh!  We could stay at a beachfront reed-roofed cabaña directly on the beach.  We could watch the sun rising over the sea and step out directly onto the sand!  A dream of a lifetime.  In truth,  my  dream was more that of actually living the experience than visiting it briefly, however, at the price of $400 a night during the highest of seasons, the brief glimpse was sufficient.

Now when I see a beautiful beach, I think of our cabaña at Nueva Vida de Ramiro.  I see the sun rising, streaking a path across the sea and our cabaña floor until it reaches the bed.  I see it later peaking through the fringe of our thatched roof.  I feel the breeze blowing in off the Caribbean Sea, and the grit of sand on the floor.
