10 of the UK’s best hidden beaches for the weekend – my picture!

My husband happened to Google me recently and found my picture in 10 of the UK’s best hidden beaches for the weekend !

My picture of the beach at Camusdarach was published in the travel article by “The Guardian” British newspaper in 2014.

I had posted my picture on Geograph.co.uk.  Geograph is a fun website in which you can wander Britain, and for me, specifically Scotland, and see picture after picture from the individual map square you choose to visit.  I used it frequently in trying to understand the road quality in remote areas.   The pictures posted on Geograph are governed by Creative Commons, so they freely used my picture as long as they credited me, which they did.

Camusdarach is a gem of a beach on the mainland: hidden, silver, with wide views of the islands of Eigg, Muck and Rhum off the coast of the Isle of Skye.  If you travel only on what is now the main road between Fort William and Mallaig, you will entirely miss the beach.  You have to exit the main road at Arisaig or the Back of Keppoch, and follow the winding two lane road B8008 through the countryside. You’ll eventually see a small parking lot on your left.  In Scotland, where there is a parking lot in the middle of nowhere, it’s a sure thing that something good is a hike away.  The walk to the left, toward the sea, is mainly level and sandy, until you get close to the beach.  Then it’s a little scramble down a dune to the view above.

This beach is not boring.   Take a short walk and you will find headlands to scramble up,  crevasses in which to tuck yourself, to await a stunning sunset.

The farm which backs the beach is called Camusdarach, and they have a campsite and two excellent self-catering units in the farmhouse.   I know they are excellent, because I rented the second story unit with my parents for a week one spring and enjoyed every minute of it.
